Portraits don't quite do people justice, no matter how lifelike they become through magic. But they are fascinating to study, nonetheless.

It made family gatherings awkward for a while, though.

[ he is 100% sure of it. hufflepuffs are a loyal and accepting bunch, which is a philosophy that hufflepuff believes in strongly — it should resonate well with the people that graduate from her house. ravenclaws are intelligent and erudite — as close to cunning as one can be, without being as shrewd as a slytherin. to slytherin, it would not be a grave insult, to be one or another.
(salazar, of course, doesn't take in the fact that those sorted to slytherin are can be considered potentially dark.)
gryffindors, however — even back then, they have been a certain rivalry brewing between his house and godric's. it doesn't help that they argue a lot, and — eventually, if the history of this place can be believed — that they end their friendship eventually due to unreconciliable differences. ]

[ others might think it surprising, but salazar himself as a more realistic view of the world, now that he's here to see what the future has in store, he's surprised to learn that some things just do not change. but his way of thinking is screwed, in that sense — he still has his beliefs, and that is something that cannot be changed. ]
